LGBTQ Cultural Competency Training
AFFA provides training and resources on LGBTQ cultural competency and awareness across multiple disciplines, customized to meet your unique needs and goals.
SAMPLE TRAINING TOPICS:
LGBTQ 101 AWARENESS TRAINING (1 hour)
The training introduces individuals to key concepts and terminology pertaining to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA) community, in order to promote greater understanding and awareness. This workshop can be customized for different settings/applications: Workplace, schools, law enforcement, medical/mental healthcare providers, etc.

- TRAINING SPECIFIC TO UNDERSTANDING SEXUAL ORIENTATION
- TRAINING THAT COVERS BROAD UNDERSTANDING OF BOTH GENDER IDENTITY & SEXUAL ORIENTATION
USING DATA FOR GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF THE NEEDS OF LGBTQ PEOPLE (1 hour)
This workshop uses data collected by AFFA, the College of Charleston, and the Medical University of South Carolina in the 2019 Charleston Tri-County LGBTQ Community Needs Assessment Survey to share the real life experiences of the LGBTQ community.
SAFE ZONE TRAINING (3 hours)
This interactive workshop promotes a welcoming and inclusive organization or workplace and creates a network of allies to offer support for the emotional and physical safety of people who are marginalized on the basis of their real or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
Training includes:
- LGBTQ 101 Workshop material
- Conversations about privilege inherent to heterosexual and cisgender identity
- Discussions about allyship and creating safe environments for LGBTQ people
CREATING LGBTQIA-INCLUSIVE CLINICAL SETTINGS (3 hours)
This workshop will guide clinicians through the world of working with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA) community (with a special focus on the “T”, Transgender) with the goal of promoting greater understanding of the needs and issues affecting the LGBTQIA community in an effort to create more welcoming and inclusive clinical spaces.
